Medical Contact Lenses
For Keratoconus, Corneal Scars, and Corneal Ectasia
When the cornea is irregular or fragile, standard soft contacts and glasses often can’t deliver clear, comfortable vision. At Grapevine Vision we provide medical contact lens fittings—custom-designed lenses that restore focus and comfort for conditions like keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, corneal scars, post-LASIK ectasia, post-transplant (PK/DALK), post-RK, and other irregular astigmatism.
What makes this “medical” vs. standard contacts?
Medical lenses are part of vision rehabilitation: they create a new, smooth optical surface over an irregular cornea and can protect fragile tissue. We use advanced measurements (corneal topography and diagnostic lens trials) to select an evidence-based design, then fine-tune with structured follow-ups until vision and comfort are optimized.
Lens designs we fit (matched to your cornea)
- Scleral lenses (spherical/toric/multifocal): vault the cornea and land on the white of the eye; a fluid reservoir smooths distortion and can relieve dryness.
- Rigid gas permeable (RGP) corneal lenses: small, highly oxygen-permeable lenses that neutralize irregular optics.
- Hybrid lenses: RGP center for crisp vision with a soft skirt for comfort.
- Custom soft for irregular corneas: thicker or specialty optics to mask mild irregularity.
What to expect from the fitting process
- Comprehensive medical eye exam to assess corneal health and rule out inflammation or scarring activity. If you’re already seeing a corneal specialist, we’ll utilize their exam findings in our evaluation.
- Mapping & diagnostics to understand your unique shape.
- Initial trial lens selection and on-eye assessment.
- Training in application/removal and care (we won’t send you home unsure).
- Follow-ups to refine fit, vision, and comfort; adjustments are common and expected.
Most patients report sharper vision, reduced ghosting/halos, and improved reading/driving confidence once their lenses are dialed in.
Safety & care (non-negotiables)
- Always apply/remove with clean, dry hands; use the prescribed solutions only.
- Never sleep in lenses unless we explicitly clear it (rare).
- Stop wear and call us if you notice redness, pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or sudden blur—these can signal infection or corneal stress.
- Keep cases and plungers clean; replace solutions daily; air-dry cases open.
Insurance & “medically necessary” coverage
When a diagnosis like keratoconus or ectasia prevents adequate vision with glasses/standard contacts, many plans consider specialty lenses medically necessary and may cover part of the fitting and materials. We’ll provide a letter of medical necessity and help you navigate benefits and financing before you commit.
